April 26, 2003 Launch Report
by Ben Taylor
Max and I arrived at PMI at around 9:00 a.m. A large crowd of participants were already assembled waiting for us to set up. Pueblo Motorsports Park was unusually busy with several events going on in addition to the normal weekend bikers. Max and I decided to get out of the traffic lanes and move a few hundred yards to the west onto the flat land. The turned out to be a great idea, as bikers have no need for flat land. Thus our launch was undisturbed.
The weather at the launch site was in the low 40s with a slight breeze and overcast skies. We started the first rack at around 9:15 or so. There were 85 rockets launched between 9:15 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Nearly five hours of constant launches…wow it was great! At mid morning the temp rose in the 80s.
Bill Moore and I flew multi-stage rockets for the first time. Bill's flew nicely, while mine needed a longer ejection delay.
Mad Max flew his Multi Roc with Glider. The glider caught several thermals and raced around in an impressive aeral display for 32.37 seconds. It was a real treat to see. Building a glider will certainly be on my list to build.
Rick brought out his arsenal of custom rockets. All flight high, straight and normal, as well as having professional looking paint jobs. Ken really has a talent on finishing touches.
A unexpected treat was watching one of Bill Moore's masterpieces: The Giant Easter Egg. I just doesn't look like it could fly, but it did so -- Most impressive.
Jason Unwin and Mad Max flew impressive egg loft rockets, while Bill's got scrambled. Fortunately, the egg was wrapped in plastic, toast not included.
Rick's Silver Comet had an impressive CATO at engine start, sending the motor about 200' into the air, while the rocket body slipped back to the launch pad. While not good for the rocket, it was a really cool display. Caulk it up to another Estes D12 engine stored in freezing weather.
We had noise makers, too. The TaylorMailer-1 was the loudest in memory and enveloped the both launch racks in a blue plume of smoke. It veered in a N.W. direction and for a moment I thought it was going to duplicate Bill's WartHog cruise missle flight.
There was something for everyone's taste: Egg Loft, Funny rockets, single stage, multi-stage, clustered, single and clustered large rockets. All in all an excellent outting.
